William James Porter Jr. (Jim) passed away in his sleep at home on September 17th, 2021 one year after a difficult and brave battle with cancer.
Jim was born on January 2nd, 1941 in Grand Junction, CO. to Una and William Porter. Jim was raised in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City where he attended West High School. He was an electrician for 40+ years, and member of IBEW. Part of his career was spent with Marv's Electric where he worked on many projects including the Hilton Hotel, school buildings and the Timpanogos Cave. On family drives he was always proud to point out the buildings he had worked on and say, “I wired that building”.
He was married to Karen Nan Teuscher (later divorced). They had two children, son Todd and daughter Anne. He later married the love of his life Shannon Swenson on June 15th, 2004. Shannon and Jim were involved in the twelve-step program and enjoyed their time at the world-conferences and campouts. These events provided them with the opportunity to celebrate Jim’s 36 years of sobriety.
Jim enjoyed hard work, fixing things, and helping others. He had a strong attention to detail and a perfectionist
nature. If something was out of place, broken, or done incorrectly he would be the first to let you know. Then he would act on fixing the issue and there was no stopping him.
Many of us got the opportunity to enjoy Jim’s direct nature. He was not one to mix words. This direct nature often provided us with many laughs when we teased him about the things he would say. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He enjoyed his time spent with all of them.
Jim is survived by his wife Shannon; son Todd (Mary Lynn) Porter, daughter Anne (Trevin) Clark; grandchildren Mason (Karinne) Porter, Teya Porter, Gavin Clark, Henry Clark, sister Wilma (Jerry) Stens, brother Gary (Jolene) Porter. Preceded in death by his parents, sister Renee, brothers Ed and Deloy (survived by wife Valerie).
The family will greet friends on Thurs., Sept. 23rd, 2021 starting at 10:30 a.m. at Quiet Meadow Farm 1805 E 1200 N, Mapleton, UT 84664 – this is an outdoor venue. A celebration of Jim’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the Spanish Fork, Cemetery.
