William Wimmer

Meaningful Gift Ideas

Our husband, dad, and bampa passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 in Springville, Utah. Bill was born on August 28, 1941 to Wayne Worth and Ivie Wimmer. Worth passed away when Bill was 8 and Ivie later married Howard Thorpe. Bill married Joye Widdison in the Salt Lake City LDS temple on November 22, 1960. On the day of their wedding, he was pulled over and talked his way out of a ticket because they were from a little town down south without many traffic lights.

Bill and Joye have spent the last 60 almost 61 years building a beautiful life together. Their lives revolve around their two children, Jeff and Jenni. Bill loved being a dad. He supported every dream, showed up at every event, and loved them dearly. Bill was a man of few words. He had a dry wit. He believed in working hard, playing harder, and doing things right.

Bill attended orientation at Brigham Young University, ducked out early and joined the National Guard. He was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis and spent two years at Fort Lewis in Washington. Bill and Joye have happy memories of those early years being young, poor, and adventurous. After leaving the National Guard, Bill began working in the family business, Thorpe Concrete Products. Following his dad’s retirement in 1973, Bill continued running the business until his retirement in 2015. He loved going to work every day and was happiest on his backhoe.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He grew up spending time riding horses in the foothills of Springville, shooting trap, hunting, fishing wherever he could wet a fly, riding dirt bikes at the Sand Dunes, and waterskiing in Lake Powell. While Bill loved all of these activities, nothing compared to snowmobiling. It was on Christmas morning of 1967 that Bill became “Wild Bill.” It was not considered a good ride unless they “cheated death one more time.” The snowmobiles got bigger and faster, and Bill became an expert rider and the leader of the Wednesday Crew.

It was not enough to simply love the outdoors, he wanted a home there. In 1983 Bill began building a cabin in Fairview. He loved the cabin and spent hours grading the roads, gathering wood, and creating countless jobs so that he could spend most of his time there. He took great pride in the cabin he built. Although friends and family were always welcome, he loved it most when he was there alone.

Bill loved being a Bampa. Beeb, Blondie, and Speedy aka Chelcie, Jessie, and Chloë brought him so much joy. He loved their visits. He loved that they laughed at his jokes. But mostly, he loved them. Becoming a great-bampa was the icing on the cake. Jaxon Wayne holds a special place in his heart and Capri and Swaizie made him smile.

Bill battled Alzheimer’s for several years, in his own words, his brain was broken. It has been difficult to watch him go from Wild Bill to Mild Bill, but his family and friends have loved and supported him. The last year has been filled with walks, drives, and watching Grit. Sitting still was never his strong suit, Bill always wanted to be going. While we wish he was here with us, it was time for Wild Bill to move on and ride in the fluffy mountains above.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joye, son Jeff (Shea), daughter Jenni, granddaughters Chelcie Wimmer (Jesse Sumsion), Jessie (Ryland) Barney, and Chloë Wimmer, great-grandson Jaxon Wimmer and great-granddaughters Capri and Swaizie Sumsion. Two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
